Updates…

I would like to let everyone know that in the past six months to a year I have diverted my focus from networking -> web server management and web development/design.

Reason for this change is due to me being a little bored with networking and looking for a change to see how else I can broaden my knowledge base. Before I get into any details, all I can say is OMG!!!

Again before I get into a few details about my progression I would like to take a moment to give a big SHOUT OUT to Brendan Otoole for imparting some of his knowledge. You have been a great help in passing on your wisdom regarding web server management/design/development!

Since the conceived idea of me undertaking some web skills I have accomplished the following:

  • Started on shared hosting with CDs
  • Quickly moved off this to a VPS (several actually)
  • Complete Linux server management
  • Learnt Cent OS 7.0 isn’t quite as good as I thought it was
  • Dropped back to Cent OS 6.5
  • Learnt Cron
  • Learnt Tar
  • Learnt a lot more about hosted DNS
  • Just finished learning SSH security methods
  • Global off-site backups
  • Managing several domains/subdomains
  • Managing blogs
  • Managing online billing packages

To add a little frustration to the mix because all blog posts have a touch of frustration to them;

I have been work on setting designing and developing a “responsive” open cart theme for my partner as she is running a candle business. Well so much for that idea since 5 days open cart decided to realise a “responsive” theme!!! GRR thanks and damn you! open cart.

However it doesn’t stop there, I follow the instructions provided to upgrade from v1.5.6.4 -> 2.0.0.0 and you guessed it, doesn’t go as planned. Its a good thing that I practice what I preach and have daily backups of everything 🙂

Moving forward I have restored the backup and am working on understanding why it failed the upgrade.

If anyone has any thoughts please let me know.

Raging, Apple, MBP, RAM, Errors!

I am about to loose it!

I have had this macbook pro(macbookpro8,2) for almost 4 years now and never missed a beat. Recently I have been noticing a few issues:

  • Kernal Panics
  • Reboots
  • Complete and utter slowness

Anyway so I finally ran the AHT via IR. It presented me with the following information:

apple-ast-macbook-pro

So I bought some new RAM “apple certified” ram at that!

You guessed it, still the same issue with the new ram.

Now if I test the new ram single stick at a time it passes every time, test single sticks in both slots also passes fine every time!

Put both sticks for testing and fails….

I am now leaning towards the fault being either the logic board or the darn DIMM slot. Just what I need right now… I did not plan to buy a new laptop until at least mid 2015 as the new broadwell chips will be out then and will be in the new MBAs.

Test post from iphone app

Hi all,

This is just a test post from my iphone app. I am just testing this as I wish to continue to my blogging on the mobile.

Can you all please let me know that this works ok?

Network Downtime

digital-ocean-ssd-provisioning

Hi All,

Apologies for the delay in having the site/blog down it has been quite a couple of weeks due to being convinced to host all my sites myself on a VPS via Digital Ocean.

I have had to learn quite a few things during this very short timeframe, shortlisted below:

  • Cent OS 7
  • Some Linux commands
  • New Dir Structure
  • PHP
  • SSH security
  • VPS hosting options
  • Register my ABN
  • Commissioning of a SaaS invoice platform (big thank you to Zac Brewer)

But however not limited to the above.

I would like to throw out a big thank you to both Brendan O’Toole and Ben Cousins for directing me to a VPS.

There is much more to come, just to short list again:

I would highly recommend Digital Ocean to anyone that interested in getting some hosted Virtual Private Server space. For anyone that is interested Please use the following special offer code: https://www.digitalocean.com/?refcode=fe6c0bce7d96

PHP

Learning PHP wonders of what it can do!

I have now fixed my wordpress feed… well almost, just need to limit it now and play with some of the CSS.

Feeling very productive!

html-php-css-code

Working away on my website, what a productive day!

Things I have fixed:

  • contact form
  • design/layout
  • links
  • about me page

Things left to fix:

  • embed latest wordpress post into home page

This last item to fix is proving to be a little difficult as I believe then index file needs to be a php file, however I have made mine a html file and as far as I am aware you cannot just rename the file… grr!

Hope there is an easy way to fix this, if anyone knows the answer please let me know asap 🙂

Many thanks in advance to those that assist.

Mail Archiving

Working in the TAFE system they only allow us to have a very small mail inbox. To assist with this issue we have forced to constantly archive our mail out of that inbox to an external location. Im not sure how comfortable I feel about this as I see it to be a security breach…. However I have now setup my apple mail to auto archive my mail from my TAFE box if its 180days or older.

Otterbox

Shopping for this phone case is driving me crazy… Lets go back to beginning and let me explain first of all…..

Ok way back in the beginning when I got one of my first iPhones I thought you know what; “I’m not going to get insurance on this plan and ill buy an otterbox this will be my insurance they are pretty strong. Having this Otterbox will be much cheaper than paying for insurance every month.”

So with that in mind the Otterbox was actually great! I have had just a plain black one in the past.

But this time I have been hunting for a particular model/colour. I was first made aware of the colour when one of my students bought one and showed me. I just loved the colour and the way it looked. So since then I have been to the following places;

  • Richmond
  • Blacktown
  • Rouse Hill
  • eBay

Going to all of these places has proven unsatisfactory as well no one has this particular colour I’m looking for.

Before I continue please take some time to look at this colour:

otterbox-apple-iphone-5s-blackSo now that you have taken some time to look at the image to the right. I would now ask you to direct your attention to the next image as i
would like to get some feedback from everyone about helping me choose which colour to get. If I simply choose just plain black I have the ability to purchase one as soon as right now from any retail outlet.

Lets move on to some maths/specifics there is one very big difference between wanting to get the blue/green and getting the plain black; and that is price point. The RRP for this case is $59.95AUD, this is the price weather I purchase from any retail outlet or purchase from Otterbox.com however if I purchase the blue/green from Otterbox.com there is an obvious charge aka delivery/freight; the delivery charge for a limited time is $9.95AUD, so now lets do the maths…. $59.95 + $9.95 = $69.99AUD. So with this grand total price in mind I’m not sure if its worth the extra cost.

Now for the plain black case:

So I guess the reason for this blog post is to get some points of view on what colour people think I should get for my iPhone.

For those of you who know me you will know that I am very impatient and I have been so close many a time to just get the plain black case for the following reasons: cheaper/quicker/simpler choice… list goes on…

Anyway hope all of you can take some time to look at this post. Many thanks in advance to all who take some time to read this, Thankyou 🙂
